The Family

“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”

Beware: this underwear may leak without warning

We're eating dinner the other night and Addison stands up in her chair. I say "Why are you standing?"

"My chair is wet."

sigh. "WHY is your chair wet? Did you spill your drink?"

"No."

noticing that her shorts have a particular wet pattern, "Did you pee in your pants?"

"No. My underwear just leaked"

Is booger a bad word?

Ah, Addison.

We went out to dinner tonight and while we were waiting for our food, Mark and Addison start a conversation.
Addison: "You're a crazy head!"
Mark: "No, you are a silly head!"
Addison: "You are a booger head!"
Mark (teasing): "oooo! You said a bad word!"
Addison (confused): "No I didn't."
Mark: "You said booger."
Addison: "Booger's not a bad word. It's a yummy word!"

mmmm...yummy.

Silence is Golden . . .but the things kids say are priceless

Today the girls and I went to see "Ramona and Beezus". It was REALLY good! Addison is a lot like Ramona, kind of a super sweet, fun loving, 'bull in a china shop' ;)

There is a scene in the movie, where the parents are under a lot of stress & everything is going wrong. The sisters get into a fight, with Beezus storming off after telling Ramona that she ruins everything she touches. Ramona goes to feed the cat (who is very old) and finds that he's passed away in his bed. A very tense and emotional scene.

Everyone in the theater is quiet, you can hear the sniffles. I look at Caroline and she has her hand over her face, sobbing. I'm crying now and as I put my arm around Caroline to pull her closer, Addison gets right up in my face and says at the top of her lungs "DID THE CAT DIE?! JUST LIKE L.D. DIED, RIGHT MOM?!

Gotta love her!

"Big Chief Little Dog"

Our old dog died today. He would have been 14 in December.

The girls are content with the idea L.D. is in heaven now. After we said our goodbyes, Mark started to fill in the dirt and Caroline says to Addison, "That's just his body, Addie. The real L.D. is in heaven."

Kids are definitely given to us to learn from.

Good dog, L.D.

'But Mom!'

Caroline had been busy for about 3 days playing in her room and making a mess in the process. I finally asked her to please try to clean it up. "I can't do it by myself!" she whined. I said, "I'm pretty sure you picked up your room by yourself the other day and did a good job!"

"But Mom! That was only a medium sized mess!"

Pinkalicious!

Tonight Mark was reading the girls "Pinkalicious", a great story about a girl who eats too many pink cupcakes and wakes up pink all over. There is a part that says, "My friend Alison couldn't even see me because I blended in with the pink peonies."

Mark got to the "...blended in with the pink..."

He fumbled with the word peonies, trying ...ponies?...perionese?...peries?...pieries?"

Finally Addison said, "it's flowers Daddy"

All the things we like to eat are animals!

This is my first post on my first blog. I guess I'll just jump right in! Last night, my 4 year old, Caroline, and I were having a conversation before bed. I'm not sure how it started, but it went something like this . . .

Caroline: I would never eat a frog.
Me: Some people do.
Caroline: (horrified) WHAT?!
Me: Yes, some people eat frog legs.
Caroline: Really?
Me: You eat cows.
Caroline: (disbelieving) What?
Me: Where do you think roast beef comes from?
Caroline: I didn't know that.
Me: And bacon and sausage are made from pigs.
Caroline: I didn't know we eat animals.
Me: How do you feel about that? About eating animals . ..
Caroline: (very thoughtful) Not good.
Me: Should we just eat fruits and vegetables and pasta?
Caroline: yes.
Me: What about fish? Is it ok to eat fish? (She LOVES salmon)
Caroline: Well, I DO like my salmon. I can't wait to tell Addie (her 2 year old sister) that all the things we like to eat are animals!
